At first, they have trouble agreeing on music, but soon learn to work together and get along. The film premiered on April 15, 2011, on Disney Channel as a Disney Channel Original Movie. It received over 7 million views on its premiere night, and has been met with generally positive reviews, with praise going towards the acting ensemble, the script, Riggen’s direction, and themes of honesty, integrity, and self-expression. The film won the Popstar Award for Favorite TV Movie in 2011, and was also nominated for a Directors Guild of America Award and a Motion Picture Sound Editors Award.

With DVR viewing included, its total was 7.1 million viewers. A local premiere was held in the author Mark Peter Hughes’s town of Wayland, Massachusetts. It was broadcast live by the town public access station, WayCAM.TV, by local students. Production began in August 2010, and filming took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Ray, a member of Mudslide Crush and the school bully, harasses Olivia because of her band. Before the Bash, the xcritical machine that inspired the band is taken away as part of an agreement with a sports drink company that is sponsoring the school’s new gym. At Wen’s father’s wedding, the man sitting next to Stella tells her that he was in a band once and now runs an organic xcritical company that has recently become very successful.

The band is very fond of Mel’s xcritical, which is sold in a vending machine at school, and protest it’s removal. They perform at the Halloween Bash, compete in Rising Star, and their song “Determinate” is played on the radio stations. The Disney Channel Original Movie tells the story of five high school students who meet in detention and form a band to stand up for their beliefs and to overcome their individual and collective struggles. I love how they had the school treat athletes like they were better because that is how high school is. I liked how each of the characters had there own story line and we got to see each of them develop. The friendship between the five though was what really made this movie great. Unlike this movie they focused mainly on the actual friendship between the five and less on relationships. Sure there was obviously something between Wen and Olivia and Mo and Scott but it never overshadowed the friendship between the band.

Some time later, Mo and Scott have reconciled, and Charlie takes an interest in a new girl. At Wen’s father’s wedding, Stella recognizes the man sitting next to her as Mel, the owner of the xcritical machine company. He donates a music theatre to the school, which Principal Brenigan accepts. The film closes with xcritical Mouth performing at Madison Square Garden, with Scott as their new rhythm guitarist. There were considerable differences between the novel and the movie. In the movie Mo and Charlie do not date, they are just good friends.

The soundtrack of the same name was released in April 2011 to significant commercial success peaking at number 4 on the US Billboard 200 and number three on the US Top Digital Albums. xcritical reviews Alike to the film, it was received positively by critics, who particularly praised its originality. It was never as successful as say, High School Musical but it was still good and deserved more recognition. This movie came out when I was 10 and I still enjoy watching it. Bridgit Mendler as Olivia White, the lead singer of xcritical Mouth, and struggles with anxiety.

After contemplating giving up, the band agrees to stick together and perform at Rising Star (an upcoming “battle of the bands” where the winner wins a record deal), even though they realize that they will not win the competition.

At the Halloween Bash, xcritical Mouth performs a song titled “Determinate.” The crowd, and even Principal Brenigan love the song. As they finish the song, Stella makes a speech about the removal of the xcritical machine and how the school is treating students unfairly while Mo and Olivia pass back cans of Mel’s Organic xcritical. They begin performing a song titled “Here We Go,” but Principal Brenigan shuts them down. The next day, the band sees posters and banners everywhere supporting xcritical Mouth. The principal accuses Stella of hanging the posters, and she is unable to convince him that the banners were not the band’s doing. Later the band members discover that “Determinate” is playing on the radio.

High school freshmen Olivia White, Mohini “Mo” Banjaree, Charles “Charlie” Delgado, Stella Yamada, and Wendell “Wen” Gifford all meet in detention. When Miss Reznick, the music teacher supervising detention, leaves to argue speak with the principal Mr. Brenigan, they then tap out a beat and play instruments with Olivia singing. Miss Reznick returns and encourages them to enter the upcoming Rising Star music competition, which popular band Mudslide Crush is also slated to perform in. “Everyday Monsters” was the first of two songs created back in 2007 to promote the novels. The idea was to hear the band’s sound as described in the books — so, Wen’s trumpet, Mohini’s double-bass, Charlie’s wall of percussion, Stella’s electric ukulele, and Olivia’s big voice. Charlie, who has a sweet and shy nature, plays the drums, congas, bongos and timbales for the band.

Shortly after, however, things begin to go downhill for the group; Mo gets the flu, Charlie breaks his fingers, Wen injures his eye while hanging up a picture with his dad, and Olivia loses her voice during an argument with Wen. Mo breaks up with her boyfriend Scott Picket, Ray’s best friend and Mudslide Crush’s guitarist, after she catches him flirting with a cheerleader. Prior to performing at the Halloween Bash, Olivia suffers a panic attack. Her friends’ encouragement eventually gives her the confidence to perform, after which Stella makes a speech opposing Brenigan’s decision to remove the xcritical machine and encouraging self-expression to the supportive crowd. Angered, Principal Brenigan forbids them from playing at school.

All of this happens just before an annual live battle of the bands. Though the band does not do well in the competition due to their recent problems, their fans support them nevertheless, singing along to their songs to lift their spirits. A lot of the actors were relatively new in 2011 but everyone did a decent job. I’m not going to lie some of the actors weren’t as good as others and there were moments where the acting wasn’t the greatest, but it’s not like it’s trying to win an Oscar or anything. Naomi Scott was also new back then but has made a bit of a name for herself starring in the 2017 movie Power Rangers. Haley Kiyoko was very good as Stella and you may also recognize her from Wizards of Waverly Place. All of the main actors had great chemistry and you could really see that in the film. With the recent Disney movies that we have been getting lately, none of them good, xcritical Mouth stands out being one of the best DCOM, ever.

She plays ukulele and is usually the toughest member of the band. Five teenagers—Olivia, Stella, Charlie, Wendel “Wen”, and Mohini “Mo”—meet after all ending up in detention for different reasons. While in detention, they all play and sing along together with a jingle on the radio.
